Fire Safety
It is estimated that in the UK alone there are in excess of 400,000 fires per year: with around 30:000 of these fires starting in commercial premises. With these figures in mind we should do what we can to reduce the potential for fire to start. We can achieve this by ensuring that we:
- Regularly clear out unnecessary equipment, paperwork, furniture and un-used cleaning materials.
- Always remove rubbish to a safe area.
- Prevent an accumulation of combustible materials in high risk areas.
- Always check the external storage arrangements for waste, this includes recycling bins where waste can be kept for longer periods of time.
You should be familiar with your organisations Fire Evacuation Policy.
Also consider the following questions:
- Where is your nearest fire exit?
- Where is the Fire Meeting point?
- What do you do when the fire alarm sounds?
- Who are the Fire Wardens at your place of work?
If you are unsure check the company Fire Safety Policy and speak to your Line Manager.
Fire Evacuation
If a fire occurs in the workplace you will need to be familiar with what to do.. The following points should be considered:
- If the fire alarm is sounded or emergency personnel have instigated evacuation you need to quickly leave the building.
- Never stop to pick up personal belongings.
- Close all doors as you leave.
- Always stay to the right of hallways and stairs and never use the elevators.
- Avoid any smoke filled areas, if you are in an area filled with smoke, crawl low to the floor as possible under the smoke.
- Always follow evacuation routes directly to the meeting point.
